A Refugee's Tale DEREV's New Video "Tides of Time" Speaks of A Yearning For Home!

Jason Hesley

Set to release their first full-length album "Troubled Mind" at the end of March 2025, Toronto prog band Derev is sharing a new single called "Tides of Time" along with a music video. This track discusses the concept of “cognitive immobility,” a mental state where a person keeps trying to revisit past events, getting stuck in a time that no longer exists.

Drummer Michel Karakach explains that leaving his hometown in Syria at 25 led him to frequently reminisce about his past, which inspired him to write the song as a form of therapy. He later learned this feeling is a recognized mental condition.

While "Tides of Time" might seem simple to first-time listeners, it contains many complex features best appreciated by trained ears. It has a unique rhythm with a 7/8 time signature over a 4/4 backbeat, moving from a calm start to an intense climax, ending with a repeated bass riff.

"Troubled Mind" is Derev’s debut album, following their 2021 EP "Leap of Faith. " The album features a mix of sounds, including both soft and heavy tracks, while incorporating Middle Eastern influences. The band aims to explore personal mental states instead of resolving them. The current lineup includes bassist Stan Komarovsky and keyboardist Ran Zehavi, with frontman Mike Symons leading live performances. The album, releasing on March 26, 2025, is recommended for fans of Opeth, Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree.
